Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
